OCTOBER SALERS E-NEWS
Hi Everybody! Hope your fall is going great – harvest is winding down and those of you on the show road are enjoying yourselves. REMEMBER: Every time you take cattle out – you are ambassadors of your breed. Take your best, do your best, and act your best!

RECEIVING YOUR NEWSLETTER
This is the LAST Newsletter that will be mailed out through Canada Post – you must subscribe on the SAC website www.salerscanada.com to receive e-newsletters and continue to be updated. If you do not have internet access, please contact a friend or family member that does; they can then subscribe and then either print it off for you, or you can view it on their computer. If you have an email address but have not yet subscribed, please do so now – while you’re thinking about it. E-newsletters will come out as frequently as there is news to share and will become the primary method of communicating with members.

NO FALL ISSUE
Unfortunately, there was not enough advertising support booked by the September 1st deadline to be able to go ahead with publishing the fall issue. Only 3.5 pages were booked and the Board knew that would not generate enough revenue to produce a quality publication with sufficient editorial and news to justify going to press. Deadlines ARE Important! If you wanted to advertise and didn’t contact the office – WE didn’t know what you were thinking.

ANNUAL PUBLICATION
The Board is looking at the situation and may decide to publish only once per year, publishing an annual “Journal” makes it even more important that serious breeders get their advertising into it. There would have to be enough copies made at the time of printing to last throughout the year, for distribution in information packages, at booth displays, auction markets, feed stores, etc. If you haven’t been advertising in the Official Breed Publication, it may be time to do so – please consider it. If there is no official publication, the breed names does not stay out in the public unless you are all doing your own advertising – and I believe, that with numbers you can get a better deal for printing and distribution of the breed information. It also allows your ad to get out to a wider customer base and more exposure could lead to more customers for your Salers genetics.

MEMBER ADVERTISING
Your SAC Directors are asking SAC members to consider adding the SAC website to any advertising done, it is believed this will benefit you, the Association and the breed. It will increase exposure to the Salers breed and permit readers of your ads to have access to additional information – thereby decreasing what you need to put in your ads for breed statistics etc. You may also want to consider developing web pages for your farm/ranch and having them linked to the SAC website. This would expand your advertising coverage and increase the value of your advertising budget.
YOU would not have to do this ad or webpage development on your own – SAC has access to website and ad designers who are ready, willing and very able to assist you. For a relatively small investment of dollars, you can have a professional, attractive and effective advertising tool. Contact the SAC office for more information a.s.a.p.

COMMERCIAL EXPOSURE
The SAC Board is also looking at producing a “generic” Salers publication that would be filled with general information about the breed, the Association, it’s programs (such as Breedplan and EPDs), the members (what you stand for and what they can expect when dealing with Salers seedstock producers). This publication would also be useful for SAC members by having our Code of Ethics, Rules & Regulations regarding eligibility for registration, definitions of what we mean by “purebred”, “fullblood”, “percentage” or “Optimizer”. Deadlines for advertising, deadlines for submitting performance data could be included. The idea is to have this a tool that would not soon be out-dated because of the information contained in it. Sale and show results would continue to be available in the “Journal”, in e-newsletters, and on the website.
For right now, the American Salers Association is developing an e-news communication to commercial feeder Associations, feedlots, buyers, and others – and they have included the Canadian and American addresses that we have been able to obtain. If SAC members have any feedlot results etc on their own Salers or Salers cross cattle, or from cattle owned by their Salers bull buyers, please forward it to the SAC office and we’ll get it to ASA for inclusion. This is a great opportunity to get the Salers-word out to these individuals and groups, to capitalize on the excellent data on Salers that has come out of the MARC studies in the States. We need to make sure people are aware that there are Canadian Salers breeders!

CANADIAN JUNIORS IN NORTH DAKOTA
This past July, Ellen Hondl and Corissa Voss, two Junior Salers breeders from Alberta, travelled to N Dakota for the American Junior Nationals in Brookings at the ND State University. It was an awesome opportunity for the girls to be involved in a well-organized, fun and educational experience just for Salers Juniors! They had a great reception and took part in showmanship, judging, seminars are various topics – all lead by the professors at the University who acted as judges, ringmen, instructors – whatever was needed.
Brian and Pat Jones (Windrush Hill Salers, Okotoks AB) travelled with the girls, and there were plenty of activities for them to be involved in too. The ASA and AJSA members were so impressed that the Canadian members had come SO far to take part, that the Montana Salers Association have offered to bid for the Junior Nationals next year, if there are more SAC juniors who would like the experience of attending. ANY INTERESTED JUNIORS should contact the SAC office or Brian Jones (403-938-6367) to discuss this. The bidding process takes place very soon – so please call now!

SAC REGISTRY MOVING TO OTTAWA
The SAC Board has decided that the registry will be moved to Canadian Livestock Records Corporation (CLRC) in Ottawa, as soon as it can be arranged.
This is a result of the work done by the committee formed at the May 2011 AGM in Carstairs, chaired by Ray Depalme, and charged with the research of alternatives for the SAC registry services going forward. It will take some time to accomplish this move, so for the time being and until further notice, please continue to send your registry work (registration applications, performance data, transfers, etc) to the SAC office address in Carstairs:
Salers Association of Canada
PO Box 879
Carstairs AB T0M 0N0
Phone, fax, and email contact information all remain the same. By request of the Board, Kathy is working very limited part time hours in the SAC office, please be sure to give yourself and Kathy enough time to process your work – if there is a need for something immediately, you may be charged a “rush” fee.
The Board members will be meeting again October 29, to continue discussions on changes necessary to move SAC forward, effectively, into the future. Contact one of your Directors, to offer your suggestions or assistance in this process.

DEADLINE FOR DATA ENTRY
BREEDPLAN participants are reminded that NOVEMBER 15TH is the deadline for having your data in to the SAC office to be included in the National Evaluation of Salers breed performance. Anything not entered prior to the evaluation will have to wait till next year’s for comparison of your animals to the rest of the breed.
